“ Calling anyone who protests against the violation of their human and constitutional rights a terrorist can end up becoming a self-fulfilling accusation. When every avenue of non-violent dissent is closed down, should we really be surprised that the forests are filling up with extremists, insurgents, and militants?
“ Strikes at population targets (per se) are likely not only to create a counterproductive wave of revulsion abroad and at home, but greatly to increase the risk of enlarging the war with China and the Soviet Union. Destruction of locks and dams, however - if handled right - might…offer promise. It should be studied. Such destruction does not kill or drown people. By shallow-flooding the rice, it leads after time to widespread starvation (more than a million?) unless food is provided - which we could offer to do ‘at the conference table.’
SURVIVAL IS IN OUR BLOOD BUT WHEN DO WE BEGIN LIVING?
This image is inspired by a series of conversations Ive had with my brother Mark Gonzales. When Mark has been there to coach me and guide me through my anxiety issues beautiful things happen when it comes to create ideas and refreshing concepts. Mark on many occasions had mentioned to me that we as people of color have made our hardship our identity. Our identity is not just being oppressed people nor just surviving. Our identity is alo a community that wants to heal and grow. We are a community that wants to LIVE. Lets all start living if we are not. Lets start building if we are not. thanks-e
A big thanks to my friend Valerie Vea for working with me on this image.
Here’s the trailer for No, which just became the first Chilean movie to be nominated for an Academy Award (in the Best Foreign Language Film category).
Rene Saavedra is a Chilean advertising executive who is recruited by the opponents of the Pinochet regime to create an ad persuading people to vote against a referendum supporting the dictator. While many on the left fear that the government will rig the voting, Saavedra hopes that his marketing skills can sell the Chilean people on the possibility of a better world. (source)
Claudio Miranda, nominated in the Best Cinematography category for the film Life of Pi, is also Chilean.
“ Nobody’s going to save you. No one’s going to cut you down, cut the thorns thick around you. No one’s going to storm the castle walls nor kiss awake your birth, climb down your hair, nor mount you onto the white steed. There is no one who will feed the yearning. Face it. You will have to do, do it yourself.
It’s a very white, middle-class complex that if you can count and read you can become President. I happen to feel that children, all children, need to have a very powerful and positive sense of who they are. Black children need this especially. It’s not an either-or kind of thing, but a two-way street. Achieve academically and you feel better about yourself. Feel better about yourself and you’ll achieve academically. - Dr. Loretta Long
